1969 Chevrolet Camaro Baldwin Motion SS427
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When the 1967 Camaro arrived in Chevrolet showrooms, it offered almost all of the division's performance hardware. Right off the bat, you could order up an SS350 and then a bit later, an SS396. The 396 came in the same three flavors as in the Chevelle SS396: 325 hp (base), 350 hp and 375 hp. But there was no 427 V8 offered. Many enthusiasts-especially racers-wanted more. Chevy dealers including Berger, Nickey and Yenko obliged by swapping 427-cu.-in. engines for the 396. Finally, the factory relented and snuck in a small number of 427-V8s (201, actually) in 1969. Most of these cars became Yenko Supercars, but others went to individual buyers. One operation took things even further-the Baldwin Chevrolet/Motion Performance connection in Brooklyn, N.Y. Dyno tuner, drag racer and entrepreneur Joel Rosen joined up with Baldwin Chevrolet to build 427SS versions of the Camaro by swapping in L72 427 crate motors and selling the L78 396 engines. Baldwin/Motion would add the 427SS Chevy II and Chevelle to its roster. Rosen already had a reputation as a dyno tuner supreme and racer. His connections with the now defunct Cars magazine helped get the word out about his hot Chevys. In 1969, the "base" Motion Camaro SS427 cost about $3800, and that included the M-22 close-ratio four-speed, modified ignition, heavy-duty suspension, a complete dyno tune and, of course, the telltale Motion stripe job. For pennies under five grand, you could get the Phase III version (there were no Phase I or Phase II), which included a balanced and blueprinted 427 with 11.0:1 compression, a Motion Phase III camshaft with high-rev kit, dyno-tuned Holley 950-cfm three-barrel carburetor atop an Edelbrock high-rise aluminum manifold, dual electric fuel pumps, a Motion-modified Mallory dual-point distributor, Hooker headers and a Motion-designed fiberglass hood. Motion likewise beefed up the powertrain and installed its own Super Bite rear suspension. Furthermore, Motion would supply whatever modifications you could afford. Based on pure racing experience, Rosen could guarantee that the Phase III Camaro would run the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds at 120 mph (with a Motion-approved driver on a sanctioned drag strip) or your money back. Car nuts from around the world-including several oil-rich Arab countries-placed orders by mail! Our feature car is an authenticated Motion car (there are plenty of fakes), fully restored to its original condition. Channeling all that Motion power to the road is a beefed-up THM 400 with a column shift, and the 12-bolt rear axle housing carries 4.10:1 gears. Wonder if that Motion guarantee still applies. 1969 Chevrolet Motion Camaro 427 - Popular Mechanics
