Congress tacked the Cash For Clunkers bill onto a war funding initiative to endure passage and now it goes to president to become law. What's it mean, do you have a car that qualifies, did you score a digital convertor box in timely fashion? These and more questions will undoubtedly get answered in days and weeks to come as DOT writes regulations that were NOT including in new law. So, basically, here is how it might work. http://editorial.autos.msn.com/artic...mentid=1070667
*only 1984 and newer *must have combined mpg of 18 or less - is this in 1984 numbers or in 2010 numbers - ratings have changed. *must be in running condition *must have been continually insured for past year *funds will be limited *new car must be at least 22 mpg combined *$3500 voucher for 4 mpg stepup, $4500 for 10 mpg step-up What I don't know: *what happens to vehicles traded in - are they crushed, become part of stream of used parts, allowed to be re-sold to people who can only afford a $500-$1500 car? *can you "buy" or be gifted a $500 running, insured clunker and the next day get a $4500 voucher for it? What I do know: a quick review of 1995 Regal I have shows its mpg at 20, ineligible. A 1985 V8 Firebird at 17 should be worth at least now $3500 towards a 2010 6-cylinderCamaro. Of course (did they plan it this way?) so will a 2008-2009 G8 GT, rated 18 mpg combined. So does that make our cars now only worth $3500 or does that boost the value by an additional $3500? Depends on vehicle disposition rules. Stay tuned to see if this law wipes all rwd V8's from the face of the earth. |

See, what I don't get is my dad is looking at trading in his 2007 Mercury Mountaineer AWD Premier with auto fold out side step, TV's in the car etc. However when he went to the dealer they offered him the $4500 form the gov't on a SUV still under warranty. So they would crush a $48,000 truck, still under warranty? That is nuts. I am sure someone would love to buy it. It just means that there will not be a V-8 on the road in a few years...

Well it is a Ford... ha ha. I don't think they have to cruch the whole car just the block. But yes this is hippy, chicken little, they world is ending, tree hugging, liberal, anti V8 bullshit! If Obama had his way we would all be driving some 50cc go cart around and all V8's would be banned.

Yeah I don't get it either. Is the deal that you can take the 4500 or whatever the dealer will give you? Not on top of the other one.

Sounds to me like the dealer is trying to screw him an 07 should be worth more.

Not a real bad deal if they offer him the trade in plus this program but I do think one is in lieu of the other.

The government sucks. Obama sucks. Tree huggers suck. End of story.
I mean, I'm all for helping the environment, lowering our fossil fuel use, etc... but I like the process to actually be based on research and logic instead of biased liberal media hype.
