Looks like this might affect some of you, so though I would post it...
General Motors is recalling nearly 1.5 million Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac mid-sized cars equipped with a 3.8-liter engine because an oil leak could start an engine fire. Under hard braking, engine oil could leak past a heat shield and drip on the exhaust manifold. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that could start a small fire that could spread to a plastic spark plug wire guide and beyond. The vehicles affected by the recall are the 1997-2003 Buick Regal; 1998-2003 Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo and Impala; 1998-99 Oldsmobile Intrigue; and 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. GM dealers will remove the plastic spark plug retention guide and install two spark plug wire retainers free of charge, NHTSA says. A total of 1,497,516 vehicles are involved in the recall. As of May 1, 2008, GM had reported one accident with an injury, and three total incidents, related to the defects, according to government documents. No fatalities have been reported. The recall does not affect the supercharged version of the 3.8-liter engine.

Yea, I got one a few months back for my S/C Grand Prix GTP. I was kinda wishing it would catch on fire... It has the oil leaking issue. I want them to buy me a Monte Carlo!

This seems really odd in light of the fact that most of the cars that fall into this age group leak oil. My GA does and it gets on the headers and it burns off. Whoopty freakin doo. None of these cars are even built anymore, and now when GM is hurting the worst they issue a recall on a 6-11 year old motor? Sounds weird. How many Grand prixs etc has anyone ever heard of catching fire?

I got a letter about this 'cause I have a '97 GPGT. It's a pretty stupid and IMO rare and highly improbable thing to happen. They just have to cover themselves of course. I didn't bother taking my car in. All they do is remove a little plastic channel. You could do it yourself... but if you maintain your engine so it doesn't leak oil and/or keep it clean, then you won't have a problem.
