SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Eric Tingwall, a senior at Michigan State University, submitted the winning essay for Inside Line's "Astra Test-Drive in Germany" contest. Tingwall wrote 500 words detailing why he was the right person to attend the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show as an Inside Line correspondent, and test-drive a U.S.-spec Saturn Astra on German roads.
"Cars are such an emotional thing," said Tingwall, "And the Astra caught my eye when Saturn said they were going to bring it over here. I'm a hatchback guy, and there aren't many in the U.S." Tingwall, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, wrote in his essay: "My combination of engineering and journalism experience and ability to tolerate the smell of sauerkraut make me the perfect candidate for this trip to Germany. I promise knowledgeable, thorough reporting for the Inside Line readers. Plus it might finally get Dad off my back for that dual-degree, five-year college program." Tingwall, a Novi, Michigan, native, will be posting live reports from Frankfurt on Inside Line's Straightline blog. The Frankfurt auto show begins Tuesday, September 11. What this means to you: A penchant for sauerkraut could help launch this Spartan's career in automotive journalism. ![]() ![]()
