TOKYO — Toyota on Thursday said it has reached a "basic agreement" with Isuzu to develop a 1.6-liter engine with an aluminum cylinder block for use in Toyota vehicles sold in Europe. Production is scheduled to begin around 2012, Toyota said.
Further details were unavailable, but Toyota said that "Isuzu will play the leading role" as both companies move forward in the development, production and supply of the diesel engine. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding late last year to study business collaboration. This is the first fruit of that undertaking, and it promises to give Toyota a stronger foothold in the European market when it comes to diesel offerings. It also helps Toyota, an industry leader in hybrid vehicles, to branch out further into other alt-fuel offerings. What this means to you: Toyota wants a piece of the lucrative diesel market in Europe — so does Isuzu. Isuzu is a sub-GM company
